What is
Diaper rash is one of the most common dermatological
conditions of early childhood. It is a rash that develops on
the skin in the diaper covered area(buttocks, perianal
region, inner thighs). Most children experience a diaper rash
sometime during their diaper-wearing phase.
It is also known as Irritant Diaper Dermatitis.
Causes
Causes
The primary cause of diaper rash is prolonged and increased exposure to wetness/moisture on the skin. Other contributing factors are:
Certain enzymes in stool irritate the skin which can cause redness and rashes in diaper area. If baby has diarrhea, problem of diaper rashes becomes more common.
Symptoms
Diaper rash symptoms:
Understanding
Closed environment created by the diaper
Diapers are usually snug fitting. This reduces ventilation to diaper area which causes baby’s skin to become warmer and moist. Excessive moisture in the skin makes it more easily penetrated by irritants and more vulnerable to swelling.
Friction
Friction between snugly fitting diaper and baby’s tender skin causes redness and irritation.
Contact with urine and faeces
The enzymes in faeces (protease and lipase) may irritate baby’s tender skin.. Urine further irritates the diaper area. As urine breaks down, it releases ammonia. This causes the pH of the skin to rise and weakens skin’s protective barrier. This makes the area more prone for infections.
Solution
Unlike moisturising creams that get absorbed quickly, a diaper rash cream should not get absorbed. If the diaper rash cream gets absorbed quickly by skin, it is unable to form a protective layer and thus slows down the healing process.
Applying a thick layer of barrier cream protects the skin by creating a more optimal environment to allow the skin to heal by minimizing contact with urine and faeces. It also helps prevent friction from the diaper. Apply a thick layer of a zinc oxide diaper rash treatment, such as Caladryl Diaper Cream at each diaper change to soothe and protect your baby’s irritated skin.
